Mechanical Product

- Front view of the clock

- some elements in the front view are texture because in the picture the glass reflects so you there is glass in the front, another element is line with the two hands and the second hand

- some principles are balance and rhythm with the time has equal space in between each other and are equally spread apart, they are to proportion

- Top view of my clock

- two elements of the top view are texture, it looks smooth, and shape with a rectangle, it also shows color, grey

- the principles it has is proportion and scale with the front view with the clock

- Side view of the clock

- two elements of the top view are texture, it looks smooth, and shape with a rectangle, it also shows color, grey

- the principles it has is proportion and scale with the front view with the clock

The purpose of the clock is to be able to tell time and know the time of day, it meets to mechanical requirements because the second hand, big and small hand all move with the time of day. It also has knobs on the back to change the time for daylight savings or a new time zone.

My Audience:
 - the audience my clock will be a broad range of people as almost everyone has a clock in their house and this clock is a good size to fit anywhere in the house. My audience is everyone who tell a time from a clock.

Opt In #2

How much does a super bowl commercial cost?
  - The cost of a 30-second ad on the Super Bowl has skyrocketed from $600,000 in the mid-'80s to an estimated $2.6 million for Sunday's game

How much does the manufacturer make off of each widget they sell?
  - A new car dealer makes a profit on the difference between the sales price of the car and its actual cost.

How many people see a super bowl add?
  - Super Bowl XLV played in 2011 became the most-watched American television program in history, drawing an average audience of 111 million viewers and taking over the spot held by the previous year's Super Bowl

Do you think it's worth it to advertise during the super bowl?
  - I think it is smart to advertise during the super bowl but not towards the end of the show, more towards the beginning. The super bowl is the most watch televised program in the U.S with roughly 111 million viewers and if you have a 30 second commerical for 2.6million I think it will pay off. People also like to watch the commercials because they are normally funny so more people will see your add.

Graphic Design: What's Going On In This Design?

Came from WIRED magazine of July 2010 on the back cover

The advertisement is a Mercedes Benz that is their new model for sale

-As a team, discuss each of the advertisements selected. Record both team members observations for the advertisement you've selected. Analyze the add using the following Message Analysis considerations:

Message Content- My add is over a new model for Mercedes-Benz that came out and the information tells us the speed and what the car is. It has precise information.

Size and Shape - My car add is a very good size picture of the new car it is centered in the page so your eyes captures it.

Readability - The readability on my add is okay, the font is a little small and maybe excess info. It does state some pretty cool facts about the car.

Needs the Audience - This does appeal the audience and it attracts the male audience, probably the wealthy part because it is a very new and nice Mercedes car.

Use of Proven Principles and Elements - The add of the car shows the form of the car and the texture by using light in its photo. The page has balance with just enough writing and a good picture. The add takes up a good amount of space with not a lot of open.

1. What are trends? Why is it important to identify them prior to graphic design?
    - A trend is fashion or items that are popular at the moment in the world or a community, its important to identify them before your graphic design because you want to sell something that is popular at the time, not something popular a while ago.

2. How does human nature play a role in how a product is marketed to a specific demographic group?
    - Its important to advertise your product in the right place or add because the car is in a more men towards magazine and guys are generally more into cars than women. It wouldn't be smart to put women's clothing in a men's magazine.

3. How is a potential audience identified?
    - An audience is identified by their characteristics such as their age, income, job and fashion trends.

4. What must you discover about the target audience prior to graphic design?
    - You need to discover what your audience is into and what they like. You need to find out what they are willing to pay for a certain item.

Visual Design: Elements and Principles

1) What are the 6 Visual Design Elements we discussed in class?
    - line
    - color
    - form/shape
    - space
    - texture
    - value

2) What are the 5 Visual Design Principles we discussed in class?
    - balance
    - rhythm
    - emphasis
    - proportion and scale
    - unity

3) Locate five items at home or at school that utilize the elements and principles of design. Post an image of each product. List and explain any visual design elements or principles that are evident in that product.
 1. The represents one of the visual designs of elements, there is a lot of space in the room. This room is similar to my living room.

2. This house represents lines, this is house is supposed to represent my house, it is one of the 6 visual designs.

3. This picture has a lot of color and some of the colors are warm and some are cool colors, this is one of the six visual designs of elements. This could be at the school and its the same flowers at my house.

4. This represents rhythm and its similar to the sheet I have on my piano at home. It is one of the 5 visual design principles.
5. This is texture and is one of the 6 components of visual design, this is the same texture as our toolbox at home.

Our Helicopter

1) A brief summary of the challenge so that you introduce an uninformed reader to the nature of the effort. List who your partner is. My partner was Trenton Austin and our challenge in building our helicopter was it had to be durable and must be able to push, pull, lift and had to be hand held. Our objective was to design and model a new toy that was less noisy and smarter

2) Why did you choose the design brief that you chose to work on? We chose to do a helicopter because it seemed like we were the only ones to do a toy and we wanted to try it out and we did pretty good on our helicopter.

3) Share insight on steps 1, 2 and 4 of the 12 step PLTW design process.
Step 1 - Our problem was that a toy company wanted us engineers to build a durable toy that was less noisy and smarter than other toys. We had to make it with 6 different parts and must be able to lift
Step 2 - Trenton and I brainstormed through drawings and talking to each other, we made three sketches of a bike, car, and helicopter and discussed which one would be fun and meet the constraints.
Step 4 - Our criteria was to make a nice toy helicopter for a big time toy company for kids. Our constraints were that it must be durable and had to be able to lift, pull, and push.
Step 12 - We communicated our results through our brochure and talking to the boss (Olson) and showing our final product to companies needed.

4) Post images/scans of your 3 possible solution sketches. Highlight any important features. Sketches should have a scale listed and a description of which perspective is shown. Call out any key features.
Picture #1 - car - has a normal car body with windows and tires
Scale - each grid equals .5 inchs so the car length is 10 in and the width is 4 in wide

Picture #2 - bike - has a simple bike frame with handle bars and two tires
Scale - each grid equals .5 in, so the length is 7.5 in and the height is 5 inch

Picture #3 - our original aircraft - has a normal plane/helicopter body with wings but ended up with blades, has a landing gear.
Scale - each grid equals .25 in, and the length is 9 in and the height is 2.5 in

5) Post an image of your decision matrix and explain results.
Our matrix was a close one between a helicopter and car. The helicopter got 25 points and the car got 23.5 points, but we thought the car would have been a little to easy so we chose the helicopter. A 10 was the best and 1 was the worst

6) Model your solution in Inventor and post appropriate images (alt+PrtScn to take a screen shot of the active window. Use Paint to crop your image).

7) Images/Scans of your marketing brochure.

The Carnival Crusise problem

What was the nature of the problem the ship experienced?
  •  A fire disabled the ship, which was then towed to San Diego. It was scheduled to sail along the coast of Mexico on a seven-day cruise. The fire was in the aft engine room that disabled its six diesel electric engines.
What repairs were required?
  • repair the crippled liner Splendor, It's unclear just how much help Carnival needs to repair the 952-foot liner, which lost most of its power Monday after a fire broke out in Splendor's aft engine room.
What impact did the unexpected arrival of the cruise ship have on the local economy?
  • the unexpected arrival actually helped out the local San Diego economy with its arrival because it helped local hotels and businesses as 1800 people docked and stayed in San Diego.
